In 1912, the Ontario government declared Regulation 17. This regulation severely limited learning in French. School could not be in French for more than an hour a day, and only for
young children. Parents, students, and teachers were very upset that it was forbidden to use their language at school.

Tina Le Moine and artist Mehdi Cayenne, in collaboration with students from York Street Public School, tell the story of the hat-pin battle.
